Chris King a.k.a Steve ‘the Loon’ Smith – In Memoriam

Humber Wave Radio is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved friend and colleague, Steve Smith, affectionately known to us all as “The Loon.” Steve left us on Tuesday, November 18th, following a short illness, and his absence leaves a space that can never truly be filled.

Steve’s journey was as colourful as his on‑air personality. A former soldier in the British Army, he first discovered his love for broadcasting while presenting shows on the British Forces radio service, BFBS, during his time stationed in Germany. That spark never left him. After retiring from the armed forces, he brought his energy, humour, and unmistakable voice to West Hull Community Radio in the early 2020s, where he quickly became a fixture of our mid‑afternoon programming and also hosted an evening feature, “The Extra Slice.”

In 2024, Steve stepped up to take on the weekday breakfast show, filling the gap left by the departing host. It was here that he truly shone, waking up Hull with his trademark wit, warmth, and unpredictability. He remained in that slot until September 2025, when ill health sadly forced him into radio retirement.

Steve’s shows were never ordinary. They were a whirlwind of music, laughter, and eccentric features—whether it was “Herman the German” or the infamous exploding cat litter tray. His style carried the unmistakable influence of his radio hero, Kenny Everett. Like Everett, Steve didn’t always follow the rules of political correctness, but in a world that often feels mad, that only made him funnier, more relatable, and more loved.

In his later years, being part of our community radio station became Steve’s greatest focus and joy. We are proud to have shared that journey with him, and grateful that Humber Wave Radio could be a home where his creativity and humour thrived.

Steve Smith was more than a colleague—he was a friend, a character, and a voice that brought light to countless listeners. His laughter, his chaos, and his heart will live on in the memories of all who tuned in.

Rest easy, Loon. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
